10 Living Room Must-Haves

For the last few years, I have had friends and family ask me for advice when decorating their homes. Since the living room is usually the first place you see in a house, and one of the most important entertaining spots, I have come up with a list of "Living Room Must-Haves" that in my humble opinion, are necessities for making a living room homey and inviting. These carry through any style...country, modern, traditional, etc.

1. An area rug. Not only does this protect your carpet from through-traffic, spills, and indentations left by furniture, these add so much texture and depth to a room. They work with hardwood really well, too! (Just make sure to put a rug pad underneath!). I suggest a higher quality rug, wool if you can. Make sure the size is to scale in the room. If you have a large living room, I suggest an 8'X10' rug. These can get quite spendy, but I have found mine at furniture stores that are going out of business, and sometimes they have them at warehouse stores such as Costco.

2. A large clock or mirror. Not only is it easy to see from anywhere in the room, but they are making such great clocks and mirrors with tons of character now. They are fairly inexpensive, and as I said, come in many styles.

3. Lamps. No, I am not talking about the $12.99 floor lamps with the plastic shades that we have all had at some time or another! Floor lamps are a great addition to every living room, and they come in all different styles. I have gotten a few at Target for around $60 that I have liked quite well. In addition to floor lamps, it is important to have a few table lamps around as well. Good lighting is key to a comfortable atmosphere. Overhead lighting can look harsh and can put shadows in weird places. I love walking into a living room in someone's house that has a cozy glow around the seating areas. Lamps are the way to get that feeling in your home!

4. Family Pictures. It doesn't matter if you have kids, or a big family. It is great to get pictures from all generations, copy them in a finish you like (I prefer sepia), and create a collage on a wall. I like both ideas of using all of the same frames or combining different styles of frames in the same color for a little variety. I also like the idea of putting a plaque with your last name above or below the family photos, or a sign that says "Family."

5. Accent Pillows. These are a great way to freshen up your living room with the changing seasons. Brights for summer, darks for fall and winter, and pastels for spring. The options are endless, and they are very reasonably priced when you go to Target, Ross, or TJ Maxx Home Goods.

6.A piece of art that you LOVE! I have a very large framed antique map that is my "art piece". Make sure to find something that reflects your style, and something that you can stand looking at for the next few years. It is perfectly okay to wait till your find the perfect piece, it is not something you want to rush into!

7. Tables! Now, I am not a fan of coffee tables. I have small children at home, so coffee tables to me say "Hi! I am going to help your child split their head open several times.! I do, however, think that you need to have something to put drinks, candles, and books on. So a nice little accent table here and there is perfect! (And what else would you put your table lamps on?)

8. Attractive Storage Yes, we all have those things we need in our living room that we really don't want to see all the time... magazines we can't bear to throw out, electronics equipments, DVD's, toys, etc. I love wicker baskets, leather boxes, and even ottomans that open up to store things. Whatever it is, remember that no one wants to see your clutter! Put it away!

9. A soft throw blanket. Yes, this one is weird, but sometimes I have had friends over at night talking late, and I love to have a blankie! They are also a great way to add texture to a boring couch! (I like a nice chenille or a great microplush one.)

10. Something that smells good. I prefer a candle warmer because there is no soot issues, but candles are great, and so are plug in warmers. Whatever it may be, scent says a lot about you, so lets hope it's a pleasant one! I prefer soft florals (like peony)in the spring, citrus or tropicals in the summer, baked goods or apple and pumpkin in the falls, and pine or cranberry/mulberry in the winter.

I guarantee you, if you are feeling like your living room is cold or bare, follow these steps to have an amazing living room! Here are a few examples: (and yes, I realize they all have coffee tables. I guess I will have something to look forward to when my kids get older!)

The Lo Down

If you were a fan of "The Hills" or "Laguna Beach", you know who Lo Bosworth is. She was always one of my favorites because she didn't play into the drama, kept her relationships off-camera, and was pretty "lo" maintenance. Well... she now has a great beauty/fashion website, called The Lo Down. Check it out!
